On 2 July 1944, the Strategic Air Force dispatched a total of 161 B-17s, 551 B-24s, 198 P-51s (45 P-51s from the Eight Air Force) and 140 P-38s against oil industry, airdromes and railroad infrastructure targets in the Budapest area in Hungary. A heavy overcast encountered over Budapest Almásfüzitő Oil Refinery limited complete success of the day’s operations. The other targets were, however, successfully attacked. Detailed descriptions of combat of both sides, fates of lost airmen and results of attacks are offered in the text for the reader with the complete lists of Axis losses and victories, as well as these for 15th USAAF are published.
